Uptime monitoring tools repeatedly test whether a website, API or network endpoint is reachable and behaving as expected. They are often the fastest way to add independent outage detection because the probe runs outside the system it watches.
What an uptime monitor actually checks
Basic monitors test HTTP, ping, TCP ports or similar reachability. More useful web checks can validate status codes, response text, TLS certificates or expected timing. The definition of “up” should match the service outcome: a 200 response is not enough when the page can return an error message with a successful status.
Probe design
- Choose locations that represent important user regions.
- Set a check interval that matches the detection objective.
- Use timeout values that distinguish failure from ordinary slowness.
- Confirm incidents from another probe when false positives are costly.
- Validate content or transactions when reachability alone is too weak.
Alerting and incident context
An uptime alert should include the target, observed failure, check location, timestamps and a clear owner. Status-page and incident-management integrations can help communication, but the monitor should first provide enough evidence to distinguish an application outage from a local probe or network problem.
What uptime monitoring cannot explain
External checks can tell you that a symptom exists; they usually cannot explain an internal root cause. Pair them with application, infrastructure or observability telemetry when responders need to know why the service failed.
Availability reporting
Document how downtime begins and ends, how maintenance is treated and whether the report is based on time or successful requests. SLA calculations must follow the agreement’s measurement rules rather than a generic calculator.
When to move beyond uptime checks
Add synthetic transactions when a multi-step workflow matters, RUM when real user populations matter, and APM when internal application diagnosis becomes the bottleneck.
